The poodle breed is the second smartest breed of dog in the world! Poodles are extremely trainable, they love learning and are very eager to please their owners. Poodles are often referred to as velcro dogs, they love to follow you all over the house. Poodles are more commonly known for being allergy friendly. Unlike most breeds, poodles do not have an undercoat, their hair is more comparable to human hair. Pure bred poodles are hypoallergenic. Because of their thick curly coats they can pull off some elaborate hairstyles. Part of the fun of owning a poodle is getting to try out all kinds of fun hairdos.
The poodle was originally bred to retrieve ducks. With their webbed feet and thick curly coat the poodle was made for the water. They love to slash and play. The “show clip” was actually designed by the duck hunters. All that thick coat would weigh them down in the water. They would leave the hair on the upper body and shave down their lower body to help them stay afloat. To keep their organs warm in the cold water the hair was kept long over the chest and head. Bracelets of ankle hair was left to keep their joints warm. The top knot was used to keep the hair out of their eyes when swimming.
The poodle actually originated from Germany, but is the national dog of France. There is however no such breed as the “French Poodle “. There is three sizes of poodles recognized by AKC (Standard, Miniature, and Toy). The standard poodle was bred down to produce the miniature and toy poodles.
