The poodle was originally bred to retrieve ducks. With their webbed feet and thick curly coat the poodle was made for the water. They love to splash and play. The “show clip” was actually designed by the duck hunters. All that thick coat would weigh them down in the water. They would leave the hair on the upper body and shave down their lower body to help them stay afloat. To keep their organs warm in the cold water the hair was kept long over the chest and head. Bracelets of ankle hair was left to keep their joints warm. The top knot was used to keep the hair out of their eyes when swimming.
The poodle actually originated from Germany, but is the national dog of France. There is however no such breed as the “French Poodle “. There is three sizes of poodles recognized by AKC (Standard, Miniature, and Toy). The standard poodle was bred down to produce the miniature and toy poodles.
